During the Meiji and Taisho periods (1868-1926), it was a commercial and trade center in Hokkaido.
Many solemn stone buildings such as banks and trading companies built at that time still exist, forming a romantic urban landscape around the Otaru Canal. Some of these historical buildings have been transformed into hotels, restaurants, and shops. Otaru is famous for its fresh seafood and abundant hot springs.
